Remembering Omary

Yesterday we received sad news from our partners at Path of Hope in Tanzania. Omary, a boy in our sponsorship program became seriously ill at the end April. He soon underwent surgery for stomach and intestinal issues, and since then his condition remained unstable. The staff at Path of Hope was closely involved offering prayer, emotional support, and help with medical fees. They visited Omary often to check on his condition and be present with him and his mother during this difficult time. His struggle for life on earth ended as he passed away this past Sunday morning, May 10th. He was 16 years old.

He was laid to rest on Monday, May 11 surrounded by his friends and family. All the children from the sponsorship program at Path of Hope and many of the church and staff members were able to attend and mourn his passing together. His mother, a widow, spent nearly everything she had on his medical treatment, leaving her with nothing left to purchase a coffin for her son. We are so thankful for the staff at Path of Hope who were able to purchase a coffin and stand with Omary’s mother in this time of heart-ache and grief.

Along with our partners at Path of Hope, we remember Omary and mourn his passing.
It is a stark reminder of how truly vulnerable the children and families are who our partners are serving across East Africa. Offering compassionate care and inviting children into a saving relationship with Jesus is so critical in situations where life is extremely fragile. We are privileged to partner with African ministries who are doing both as they love and serve the children God has put in their care—for as long as He puts them there.

We also remember that our hope is in a Savior who has conquered death. And trust Omary is experiencing that truth face-to-face.
