INTRODUCING SHELTERING ARMS MINISTRY

INTRODUCING SHELTERING ARMS MINISTRY

Many years after the Lord’s Resistance Army committed unspeakable acts in Uganda, the people of the Moyo District continue to face socio-economic challenges. These include food
insecurity, poor road networks, high levels of unemployment, illiteracy, and the lasting effects of trauma. Additionally, 35% of people living in Moyo experience extreme poverty, which is defined as living on less than $1.25 per day. Life expectancy is a dismal 52 years. The literacy rate is only 66%, and youth make up a majority of the population.*

Moved with compassion over the plight of the orphans and vulnerable children in this area, Maku Fabian, a resident of Moyo District and a reverend of the local Anglican church, founded Sheltering Arms Ministry.

“My heart becomes burdened when I see little children suffering, yet they are very innocent. There are a lot of needy children here. Some are total orphans and others are from very poor homes. I feel I should take action and help them,” shared Reverend Maku.

Rev. Maku Fabian first encountered extremely vulnerable children in 2012. He was working at Amazing Grace Children’s Home in Adjumani, Northern Uganda. The home hosts refugee children from South Sudan. It was his involvement in this home and his interaction with the children there that sparked an awareness of the needs of vulnerable children, and birthed within him a deep passion for service to these precious kids. This same passion would later compel him to partner with local churches and leaders to start an organization caring for vulnerable children in his own community.

Sheltering Arms Ministry (SAM) currently supports 20 children. Each week, the children meet at local churches to be taught the Word of God. Volunteers from these churches organize and facilitate program activities. They also provide a meal to each child!

Lahash is thrilled to announce that we are forming a new partnership with SAM. It is our aspiration and desire that through this partnership, SAM will be empowered to continue the great work of providing holistic care to these children. Commenting on this new partnership, Lahash East Africa Director Edwin Angote said, “I believe that through this collaboration there is going to be a light shining forth and casting its beam on the children we are going to work with and their families. I’ve seen this happen many times at our other partners' locations. These children’s dreams will be rejuvenated; they will be discipled and mentored. They will also receive school fees, food, clothing, beds, mattresses, health care support, and all other basic needs from the program.”

We are ready to walk alongside Sheltering Arms Ministry! We want to support these precious children, impress upon them the love of God, and inspire them to hope, dream, and reach their highest potential.

Matthew 5:14-16 says, “But you are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Will you shine your light together with us at Sheltering Arms Ministry? Will you ignite the fire of change in Moyo? Will you sponsor a child and make a difference in his or her life?

Please consider sponsoring a SAM child today!
