SOUTHERN SUDANESE FINDING SHELTER IN UGANDA

International Widows’ Association of Southern Sudanese Refugees in Uganda (or IWASSRU), was founded by Susan Tabia and is located in Northern Uganda. The children in IWASSRU are ethnically Southern Sudanese, but during Sudan’s civil war they came to live in Uganda in one of two corporate homes headed by IWASSRU — Amazing Grace Children’s Home in Adjumani and Kampala House in the capital city of Kampala.

These two homes are guided by Lahash’s Holistic Care Model, meaning the children receive appropriate spiritual, physical, emotional, mental, and environmental care. There is a family atmosphere and the children live in community, with dedicated staff members who provide food, shelter, and medical attention. The children go to nursery, primary, and secondary school, and attend the local church. They also contribute to their community by tending the gardens, learning how to grow crops, prepare food, and care for younger children.
