Join The Team In: Community

Lahash is growing, and we are eager to connect with people who might be ready to JoinTheTeam, as staff members or as volunteers! This is the first of a three-part blog series that will help you get a sense of what it’s like to work at Lahash. Check out for our current openings!

At Lahash, community is more than an idea or a goal, it is a way of life. The work we do in East Africa is important, and it is equally important that we do it as a community. Our goal is to build long-term meaningful relationships with our African partner ministries, and also with each other here in Portland.

We live this out intentionally and practically, realizing that it contrasts distinctly with the individualism of American culture. In choosing to gather regularly for shared meals and fellowship, we get to know each others’ families and hear each others’ stories. As we walk alongside each other through life, we celebrate milestones like graduations, weddings, new babies, and retirements.  We share burdens and hold each other up through the challenges and hard times, too.  An atmosphere of friendship, kindness, and concern is cultivated for the benefit of all.

This extends to our work, where we take a collaborative approach as often as possible.  It is worth it to make space for a range of ideas and variety of voices. Our goal is to work as a team, valuing each member’s vital role in the plans and projects that fill our schedules.

Not only are we a local community, we are a global one. In fact, our ministry partners are our best teachers. East African culture is naturally communal and others-focused. It takes creativity, commitment, and a lot of air travel to build a community that spans across the globe, but we are experiencing the life-changing results of prioritizing relationship and connection.

Joining the Lahash team is more than getting a job – it is joining a community.
