01 Mar Rice & Beans Month: Ash Wednesday
If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. (I Corinthians 13:3)
Engaging in Lent with Love
Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent – the 40 days leading to Easter (not counting Sundays). Lent is a reminder to identify with Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness. It is a time for sacrificial discomfort, both spiritually and physically. It is an opportunity to say no to self, that we may give more to others in need.
But as Paul makes clear in I Corinthians 13, there is not much point to doing any of these things unless we are motivated by love. Spend these first four days of Lent seeking God’s heart of love, allowing it to fill and nourish you for the journey ahead.
These initial passages are chosen to focus our hearts on God’s love as we begin. Each of the following six weeks include a devotional, an East Africa Connection, a daily scripture reading, and a prayer, all focused around unique themes for our journey through Lent.
Reflect on the daily reading, closing with the prayer below
Thursday: Psalm 103:1-22
Friday: John 17:20-26
Saturday: Romans 8:31-39
God, we confess our many limitations and our great need for you. As we change what we feed our bodies, we trust you to feed our hearts. By your grace, use this journey to increase our capacity for love and compassion. Transform us as only you can. Amen.
