THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIP
The journey to East Africa quickly became more than a trip; it was an experience that wove itself into the fabric of my being. My son Micah and I traveled together to visit several of Lahash International’s partner ministries in the summer of 2024. As a new board member, I was already drawn to Lahash’s commitment to holistic care for vulnerable children, but I knew that experiencing their work firsthand would be profoundly impactful.
Our itinerary included a visit to Lahash’s Kenyan partner Nipe Tumaini— “Give Hope” in Swahili. This center was not just a place of shelter; it was a vibrant family, led by local individuals who poured their lives into the well-being of each child. Stepping through the gates, we were met with a world brimming with resilience and joy. We saw laughter, spirited games, praise and worship songs around a bonfire, and the unwavering love of caregivers who embodied the holistic care that Lahash champions. From nutritious meals and eager learning in the classroom to the emotional support and comforting embraces, it was a community intentionally fostering healing and belonging.
A highlight of our time was a home visit with a young girl with health issues. Meeting her and seeing the love and warmth of her parents transformed the abstract idea of sponsorship into a tangible relationship. Sitting in their modest home, sharing stories, and hearing firsthand about their struggles moved me to tears. It was a moment that underscored the profound impact of the support she would receive — not just providing for her material needs, but also fostering dignity and showing her that she was seen and valued.
This trip shattered any preconceived notions I might have held about international aid. I witnessed that it wasn’t about outsiders swooping in with solutions; it was about empowering local individuals who were already deeply invested in their communities. It was about fostering sustainable change from the ground up through genuine partnership. As the Bible says in Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
Lahash’s partnership model, built on the gospel message, mutual respect and a shared vision, is a living testament to this truth. The local leaders and caregivers are the heart and soul of the work, and Lahash’s role is to come alongside them, providing resources and encouragement. Returning home, the photographs now hold a new depth of meaning. They are not just images of smiling children; they are reminders of the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of a partnership woven with threads of compassion and mutual respect. It is the most powerful force for change I have ever witnessed.
