RICE & BEANS MONTH
Every March (or Lent) since 2010, the Lahash community extends an invitation to connect more deeply with our East African friends by simplifying our diet. Intentionally filling our plates with less expensive foods ends up saving money on our grocery bills that can be donated to improve nutrition for the kids in the Sponsorship Program. Through this act of solidarity, our love for the vulnerable becomes as tangible as a bowl of rice and beans.
There are lots of ways to participate in Rice & Beans Month and put your love for the vulnerable into action through these central themes:
- Simplicity: altering our diets to emphasize basic and inexpensive meals
- Solidarity: standing in unity with our brothers and sisters in East Africa who have limited resources and inadequate nutrition
- Sharing: donating our saved money so that vulnerable kids and their families can receive much-needed nutritional support
By intentionally eating simple foods that mirror the diet of our East African friends, we connect our lives with theirs in meaningful ways. We also disconnect from some of the unhealthy patterns of western culture that can keep us physically full while leaving us spiritually empty. God faithfully uses Rice & Beans Month to satisfy both physical and spiritual hunger through the sharing of a common meal.
